Interior Painting Christchurch:
Professional Results, Minimal Disruption
Clean, careful, professional
Living in Your Home During a Paint Job?
I Make It Work.
Interior painting isn’t just about applying paint to walls – it’s about working in someone’s home while they’re living in it. Kids, pets, work-from-home schedules, furniture that can’t be moved. I get it.
After 37 years painting everything from Christchurch’s biggest commercial fit-outs to occupied apartment buildings, I know how to deliver professional results without turning your life upside down.

Getting it right every time
Why Proper Interior Prep Matters
Most people think interior painting is the easiest job. It’s not. It’s the most visible. Every imperfection shows under indoor lighting. Every rushed repair, every skipped sanding, every thin coat – you’ll see it when the sun comes through your windows or when you turn the lights on at night.
Surface Preparation That Actually Works:
Crack and Hole Repair
I don’t just fill cracks – I cut them out properly, apply flexible filler, sand smooth, and spot-prime. Cracks that are just filled over will reappear in months.
Skim Coating vs. Sanding
Textured walls or surfaces with multiple paint layers often need skim coating (a thin layer of plaster) to create a smooth base. I assess what your walls actually need, not what’s fastest.
Wallpaper Removal
Old wallpaper needs complete removal and proper surface prep. Half-removed wallpaper or residue will show through paint and cause adhesion failure.
Timber Preparation
Skirting boards, architraves, and door frames need sanding, filling, and spot-priming. I don’t paint over dirty or glossy surfaces and hope for the best.
Pro tradie tip:
The Lighting Test: I check walls under raking light (light from an angle) before painting. It reveals every imperfection. If the wall isn’t smooth under raking light, it won’t look good painted. That’s when I know it needs more prep.
Room-by-Room Interior Painting
Different rooms have different requirements. Here’s how I approach each space:
Living Areas & Bedrooms
- Full wall and ceiling repaints using premium low-VOC paints
- Feature wall color placement for visual interest
- Detailed cutting-in around cornices, skirting, and architraves
- Coordination with your schedule – bedrooms painted while you’re at work, or room-by-room to keep spaces usable
Kitchens
- Grease and grime removal before any paint goes on
Cabinet painting and refinishing (spray or brush, depending on the finish required) - Splash-back areas with appropriate primers and durable topcoats
- Minimal disruption – staged work so your kitchen stays functional
Bathrooms & Laundries
- Moisture-resistant primers and paints designed for high-humidity areas
- Mould treatment and prevention
- Proper ventilation during drying (critical in winter)
- Careful work around tiles, fixtures, and fittings
Hallways & Stairwells
- High-traffic areas that need durable, washable finishes
- Height access for stairwell ceilings (I’m rope-certified, so tall stairwells aren’t a problem)
- Scuff-resistant coatings for narrow hallways
Ceilings
- Repair of cracks, water stains, and texture damage
- Matching existing texture (stipple, swirl, smooth)
- Flat or low-sheen finishes that don’t highlight imperfections
- Multiple thin coats for even coverage (never one thick coat that sags or shows roller marks)
my approach
Living Through the Paint Job:
What to Expect
Before I Start:
- I protect your floors with heavy-duty drop sheets (not the thin plastic rubbish that slides around)
- Furniture gets covered or moved to the center of the room
- I tape off areas that aren’t being painted: light switches, power points, door handles
- Your belongings are treated with respect – this is your home, not a construction site
During the Work:
- I keep the workspace tidy each day – no paint-covered tools left lying around
- Drop sheets stay in place and get cleaned regularly
- I work room-by-room when possible, so you’re not displaced from your entire house
- Low-VOC paints mean minimal smell and faster occupancy (you can usually sleep in a room the same night if needed)
After Completion:
- I remove all tape, drop sheets, and painting gear
- Touch-ups completed during a final walkthrough with you
- Furniture moved back (if I moved it)
- You’re left with a clean, freshly painted space – not a mess to clean up

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to move out during interior painting?
Not usually. I work room-by-room when possible so you can stay in your home. Low-VOC paints mean minimal smell and faster occupancy.
How long before I can move furniture back?
Walls are usually dry to touch within a few hours, but I recommend waiting 24 hours before moving furniture back to avoid any accidental marks or damage to the fresh paint.
What about paint smell with kids or pets?
I use low-VOC paints specifically to minimize this issue. There’s far less smell than traditional paints, and rooms are usually safe to occupy the same evening.
Can you help me choose paint colours?
I can show you samples and explain how different colours will look in your lighting, but I’m not an interior designer. I recommend getting sample pots and testing on your walls before committing.
Do you paint kitchen cabinets?
Yes. Cabinet painting requires careful prep, the right primers, and often a sprayed finish for a factory-like result. It’s a cost-effective way to update a kitchen.
What if I find a problem after you've finished?
I do a final walkthrough with you before calling the job done. If there’s anything you’re not happy with, I address it then. If something comes up later, give me a call.
Can you match existing paint colours?
If you have the paint tin with the colour code, yes. If not, paint suppliers can sometimes match a sample, but it’s not always perfect – especially with faded or aged paint.
